Seven Tips For Your Next Move

Learn from our experience and implement these moving tips to make your next move a breeze.

At Around the Bend Professional Movers, we charge hourly for our moving services. And while this means we can fit within any budget, it also means you can get billed for unnecessary labor. We are happy to help rearrange rooms, assemble desks, beds or other furniture, help move items into or out of an attic, help clean or unpack…we are a full-service company and willing to assist with whatever you need. But when paying by the hour, you want to make sure the move is fast and efficient. Below are seven tips and tricks to keep in mind when preparing for your move, to ensure you aren’t wasting hard-earned money.

1. Have as many items packed as possible.

This may seem obvious, but many people are still boxing and packing on moving day. If you don’t have the time or the patience to pack up your belongings, we can certainly do the packing and boxing for you. But if you want to save on that time, try to have everything packed and ready to go ahead of time.

A fully packed house takes approximately half the time to load and unload than an unpacked house would. Loose items are okay, but the more loose items you have, the more trips it takes into the truck. Combine as much as you can into boxes.

Note: We can provide the boxes! This is much easier than getting them yourself. We will bring them to you before the move day, or on it if we are helping you pack.

2. Label your boxes in detail.

This is such an easy thing to do, but many people overlook this simple task. Write on each box, on multiple sides, what is inside the box and what room of the new house or apartment it belongs to. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it allows our movers to place each box or item in the room it needs to be, and it will save you time later when you’re unpacking.

3. Disassemble furniture ahead of time.

Our crew will gladly help disassemble and assemble furniture if you’re not able to. But if you want to save some time, taking apart furniture the night before will help. Not all furniture needs to be disassembled. We recommend taking apart the following items: Bed frames, desks, removing legs from couches, removing shelves from bookshelves, and removing legs from large tables, if possible.

Pro Tips:

  • Put all screws, nails and hardware from a piece of furniture in a ziploc bag and securely tape it to the piece of furniture so you don’t lose anything.
  • If you’re not tech savvy, take pictures of the wiring on the back of your television, modem, etc. This way you can easily connect everything the way it was.

4. Use clothes, towels and pillows as cushioning.

Bubble wrap and paper for your fragile items can get expensive if you’re wrapping every plate or glass in your kitchen. Instead of, or in addition to, use t-shirts and towels to wrap fragile items. Use small pillows inside boxes (especially with lamps) to keep things from moving or shifting during transit.

5. Leave a walking path inside and keep the truck loading zone open.

On the day of the move, make sure there are no vehicles where the truck needs to be parked and any children or pets stay away from the loading zone. Within the home or apartment, make sure there are walking paths to each room so our movers don’t trip. If you have children or pets, have a plan on where they will be during the loading and unloading process.

6. Mock up your storage space with tape.

If you’re worried about everything fitting into a truck or storage unit, mark the size of the space on your floor with masking tape. Then you can stack your boxes in that area to ensure everything will fit.

7. Let us know the number of rooms, stairs, boxes and pieces of furniture being moved.

When charging hourly for moving services, it can be difficult to provide an exact quote. We certainly don’t want to estimate one cost and then charge you more. Giving us as much information as you can ahead of time allows us to provide you the most accurate estimate as possible.
